After listening to William Hyland's audio book, "George Mason," I had to see Gunston Hall. It was beautiful, and it made the entire book come alive. I am a member of the DAR. This part of American history has always intrigued me. This audio book was one of the best ever and seeing Gunston Hall was worth the 500 round trip to see it.
What an amazing visit! The tour was an hour long. There’s a small museum with interesting facts and interactive stations. Worth the reading and great intro before tour. The tour guide (Laura H.) was amazing!!!! She knew so much, provided thorough answers that connected with other historical estates and period events that I’ve visited. The house was so interesting and a great architectural inspiration! And what was so pleasant was how large the property was, how we were able to ask so many questions on your as opposed to being shuttled through like other more popular sites (or Mt. Vernon), and it was more tranquil being in a more remote and undeveloped area of Alexandria. Only sad part was that the garden was being restored so it was difficult to get a river view. But I’d be so glad to return!!!
We loved it. This is such a beautiful location. There were plenty of things to learn about this important person in VA history
We came here on a Friday. We were the only ones on the tour it was 6° but so, so worth it. Our tour guide was very nice and knowledgeable. The house is so beautiful, way better than Mount Vernon! A must see.. the wood carvings.. do die for. Was only $10 to enter. Definitely worth it and will be back. This definitely is a hidden gem. Hopefully more people can come out and see the Beauty and learn some history.
What a fantastic find this place was. The visitor center is really interesting and the tour guides of the house itself highly knowledgeable. In my opinion, it is far more interesting than Mount Vernon, and way less crowded. L
My first time coming here was for the Cocktails by Candlelight event. Gunston Hall is absolutely beautiful and so peaceful. The period food and drinks that I tried were wonderful. I adored everyone that I met who worked there, they were all super friendly and helpful. I was able to take a tour of the Mason house and walk through the house that generations of people have walked through for centuries! It was such an amazing experience that truly gives you a sense of place and time as well as a perspective on where you fit in this huge world that we live in. I'll definitely be going back for years to come.
Very glad we visited this historic house and location. The restoration was painstakingly accurate. The docent/tour guide Susan was superb. It's a nice historic home in an area well protected by multiple park and Wildlands agencies.
Well maintained by the DAR. House tour and museum are well worth the visit! Learn something new every day!
